Body oils are the most effective single-step treatment for dry skin — they seal moisture into the skin barrier in a way that creams and lotions can’t match on their own. Unlike water-based moisturizers that sit on the surface, oils absorb into the lipid layer and stay there, which is why skin feels noticeably softer for longer after use.

For dry and very dry skin, the ingredient list matters more than the brand. Look for oils high in oleic acid — argan, marula, rosehip, and squalane are the gold standard. These penetrate deeply and mimic the skin’s natural sebum without clogging pores. Avoid formulas where mineral oil is the primary base; it coats rather than nourishes.

Application makes a significant difference. Always apply to damp skin within 60 seconds of stepping out of the shower — this locks in the moisture already on your skin rather than drawing it out. A few drops go further than you think; warm between palms before pressing into skin.
